PORTUGAL – A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE presented by David Carter
The word “potential” has hung round the neck of Portuguese wine for far too long and as the market has matured, young producers have gained more confidence, with influences from working outside their own country.
With over 250 unique grape varieties, mostly with unmemorable names, it can be confusing for consumers to know what’s in the bottle. So let’s try to ignore the grape varieties and concentrate more on the regions and producers.
We’ll have fresh white and juicy red wines together with more substantial whites. There’ll also be some more complex aged reds from the Dão and Douro. The exact line up of regions and wines is yet to be decided, but wines from the Douro, Minho, Alentejo, Lisboã, Dão and Bairrada are all in the starting blocks.
