2025 – February: Bulgarian Wines

17th February 2025
We’ll be back at The Forester with a tasting in our more usual format.

If you remember those heady days in the 1980’s when you could buy a half decent bottle of Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, from any wine shop to take to a party, for around £4, you may have wondered, “where did they go”? If you’re too young, then here’s something new for you!

So much has happened since the collapse of Soviet control when Bulgaria was the world’s second-largest wine producer. Now, after huge investment, its mix of international and rare indigenous grapes, unique terroirs and a long winemaking history combine to show once more the promised quality that Bulgaria can produce.

Today Bulgaria is an exciting, emerging wine destination with all it takes to produce great wines. The summers are hot and sunny, good for ripening grapes, with temperatures moderated by the Black Sea, allowing for milder conditions that maintain good acidity and freshness of flavour.

Wine Educator Vivienne Franks makes a welcome return to Charlemagne to present a taste of these new Bulgarian wines on Monday 17th February, upstairs at The Forester.
